The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, which hold enough frozen
water to lift oceans 65 metres, are tracking the UN's worst-case
scenarios for sea level rise, researchers said Monday, highlighting
flaws in current climate change models."
It’s time to stop building structures and services on floodplains
especially floodplains of river estuaries and on low coastal areas.
Scientists are unsure of the sea rise that will inevitably occur because
land ice is melting at a greater rate than first predicted and sea
water is expanding because the sea water is warming. It is usually suggested
that the sea will rise by at least a metre by 2100, only eighty years
from now, but scientists are now stating this is a gross
underestimation.
The cost to governments and taxpayers will be enormous
when services require relocation. The cost to taxpayers will be enormous
if planned retreat is not agreed and taxes are utilised in a vain
attempt to hold back the sea to protect private property.
