Preparing for Costly Sea level Rise

"Ice Sheet Melting Is Perfectly in Line With Our Worst-Case Scenario, Scientists Warn  MARLOWE HOOD, AFP

1 SEPTEMBER 2020

The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, which hold enough frozen water to lift oceans 65 metres, are tracking the UN's worst-case scenarios for sea level rise, researchers said Monday, highlighting flaws in current climate change models."

It’s time to stop building structures and services on floodplains especially floodplains of river estuaries and on low coastal areas.

Scientists are unsure of the sea rise that will inevitably occur because land ice is melting at a greater rate than first predicted and sea water is expanding because the sea water is warming. It is usually suggested that the sea will rise by at least a metre by 2100, only eighty years from now, but scientists are now stating this is a gross underestimation.

The cost to governments and taxpayers will be enormous when services require relocation. The cost to taxpayers will be enormous if planned retreat is not agreed and taxes are utilised in a vain attempt to hold back the sea to protect private property.

Preparing for Water Shortages

Dams will only fill if the rainfall increases but this isn’t predicted in Australia.

Increased temperatures and greater droughts have already led to immense water shortages with some Australian towns trucking water in an increasing number.

Some suggestions for governments are:

• protect the water storage we have from mining pollution and fire damage

• reuse and recycle water

• grow alternatives to cotton and other water greedy crops

• protect our artesian water

• catch storm water in cities

• assist rural communities to increase their town water availability

• support farmers in transitioning to better farm and grazing practices

• desalinate water using renewable energy

• facilitate composting toilets

• protect our water catchment areas from logging, which dries out the forest

• protect our water catchment areas from any practice which reduces water run off

• urging mining companies to filter waste water and create wetlands

• urging irrigators to establish retention ponds of wastewater for reuse

The dangers of air pollution including smoke pollution have been brought home to many over the last few months. Wildfire smoke has penetrated many cities and covered huge areas of regional Australia. Doctors are warning that smoke contains minute particles that penetrate into the smallest parts of our lungs. Pregnant women and those with respiratory problems are urged to stay indoors.

Some suggested government actions for this aspect of our climate crisis are:

• a comprehensive public health program  • revision of labour laws to allow those at most risk to work from home or in a safe environment  • free respite facilities for the most vulnerable especially the homeless  • the building of smoke-safe public housing to accommodate the homeless  * funding research into lung disease  • ensuring other sources of air pollution are completely controlled  • provision of free quality face masks

Suggested actions for governments are:

• preventing the erection of any building or services on floodplains  • creating flood retention structures  • better funding emergency services  • reducing polluting carbon emissions  • establishing flood shelters for people and animals  • establishing a service for the rescue of animals and people  • farmer education and research programs which take account of more frequent floods

Heatwaves are already a major killer around the world.

Here are just some suggested preparations:

• tougher insulation requirements in buildings

• cool retreat areas for those unable to remain cool in a home

• modification of worker safety protections

• modified building regulations

• air conditioned public transport and public buildings

• increasing health budget

• increasing public health education

• preparation for the compassionate processing of climate refugees

• reviewing the predicted effect of extreme temperatures on transport   and service facilities

• back up power supplies and resources for hugely increased airconditioning demands
